Yes, it's possible. It may say, "Subscribe to Captivate 9," but you can run version 8 instead. Many subscribers still are, and many have both releases running on their machines at the same time.
If anybody else has told you otherwise, they're not correct.
And can you tell me the difference between a standalone license and a volume license? Because that's what I heard so far: I need to buy a volume license and then downgrade to 8.

In either event, no matter what you buy, if it doesn't work out for you then you can always change your mind or go the other way or get a refund using Adobe's return policy:
