Here I selected a blue segment with the lasso tool and placed it on a new layer (CTRL+J) - Layer 1
Next I selected a red segment and placed on a new layer (CTRL+J) - Layer 2
I converted the Background copy layer to b/w (ALT+CTRL+B)
End result is a b/w picture with two areas with color.
