Hey everyone,
My name is Quin and I have been making a podcast in my spare time. I've been using Adobe Audition for both the recording and multitrack work, and one recent addition I've made to the podcast is recording Skype calls with some people. I've wanted to get them into Audition to work with, but i've found this pretty challenging. First, the Skype audio recording settings are (as illustrated in the screenshot below) pretty limited.
The files – even they are audio only – are recorded in .mov format and i when i bring them into Audition they are opened as stereo audio files with four channels (i believe that's the phase) even though they audio seems to be exactly the same in both channels.
I've been using range markers to find snippets of audio i want to insert in multitrack view. The recordings i do at my house (inside of the audition app) with microphones and an Apogee duet, the audio comes out like this:
This audio is really easy to segment and do nondestructive mixing in the multitrack mode of audition. I can use a Bus and turn this audio into stereo quite simply (the audio shows up in both channels)
What I'm trying to discern is the best method to take the first section of audio (with four channels) and send it to the multitrack. When i take a range marker from the converted .mov file and send it to the multitrack mode, the multitrack audio levels are way off. Only half of the audio comes up as amplified and i can't use a bus to mix it down to the point where the audio levels are correct. It looks like this, which is not at all what the original audio levels were recorded at (see the first screenshot from the waveform view above):
Does anyone have a suggested workflow for how i can convert this audio so it's matching the recordings i do from home? I've tried a number of methods but they all seem rather long and counterintuitive and I'd really like to hear from some more professionally minded people about how i can do this, ideally minimizing the number of destructive edits i do to the original audio file. If i have to do some initial conversion, that's cool, in which case i'd like to hear some suggestions on how to do that as well.
Thank you so much for your time and help,
Quin
