I upload my photos to my laptop, tag with E13, then back up to an external hard drive. But when i search for photos using my tags on the external, they aren't there. What am I doing wrong?

I upload my photos to my  laptop I tag them with elements 13 and then I back up to an external hard drive. When I search for the photos on the external my tags aren't there. What am I doing wrong?
