I replaced the script with what you suggested and yes, it works fine now. I haven't started entering anything into my database or anything as I'd like to get all my username/password and login/logout pages laid-out first so I'll continue with that for now. If anyone has any updated links for newbies working with version 5.3.29 phpinfo() I'm all ears (or eyes lol).

If your php version is 5.3 then your mysql connection should have worked BUT it would not have been the wisest of options to take since it's now too old to consider going forward.
I dont really think the version of php you have available is that important now that you have estabilshed its compatible with mysqli and you can connect using that method, that's all that matters - you're now in good shape to move ahead.
