Your LR catalog is a file with the extension .lrcat and is almost certainly not anywhere near 50GB and will be upgraded seamlessly by LRCC. Your pictures files which may easily be 50GB or more are not touched and will be fine. That said, it is always a good idea to be sure all files are backed up all the time.
